On 20 June, we will be celebrating the 35th anniversary of Kunsthaus ACUD with exhibitions, concerts, performances, guided tours, theatre, films, workshops, food and drink throughout the building. With this festivity, we want to celebrate the multiplicity, present past and, above all, current contributors and projects within the house, which, despite an increasingly difficult political and economic environment, bring this building to life for cultural practitioners and visitors alike. We want to look back at the past 35 years and at the present, during which not only the building but also the city around it has undergone fundamental change. Founded in 1991 by East Berlin artists on Veteranenstraße, the Kunsthaus ACUD has survived multiple crises, emerging each time with renewed vigour and fresh ideas. Yet the Kunsthaus was never a single institution with a single management team and programme, but rather an association of creators, curators, artists and operators who, individually or collectively, have time and again created culture for the public—whether in a single room, throughout the building or across the city. Throughout all this, ACUD has remained true to its goal of being an open space, a place free from commercial pressures, and thus offering room for artistic experimentation. We are celebrating this perseverance and commitment to free culture and independent structures on 20 June across all spaces, and we invite all neighbours, companions and culture enthusiasts to join us.
