Since 1998, Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley have raised their electric guitars as Sunn O))), distilling the metal power chord into a primordial drone consuming rhythm and conventional form whole. Cloaked in fog and volume, their performances unfold in infernal sound baths, devotional and overwhelming in equal measure. Now the duo return with a new self-titled album, their first full-length for fellow Seattle legends Sub Pop. Stripping the project back to its core, Anderson and O’Malley push guitar, bass and synthesizer to symphonic extremes. Captured with forensic detail and re-amped into the landscape itself, the album’s recording sessions blasted the duo’s seismic tones into the outdoors and re-recorded them across vast distances, building songs from well over a hundred guitar tracks at a time. The result is a hyperdistilled monolith of snarling distortion, glinting feedback and low-frequency pressure that merges amplifier worship with the rumble of distant weather. For this performance, Sunn O))) will present the new self-titled album in full.
